What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization explained for business owners
AEO is the work of getting your business named inside the answers AI assistants write. A plain-English guide to what it is, what it involves and what it cannot promise.
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making your business the answer that an AI assistant or search engine gives to a question. That includes ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and the AI summaries on Google.
AEO in one paragraph
Traditional SEO tries to place your page in a ranked list of links. AEO tries to get your business named, quoted or cited inside the written answer. When someone asks "which dentist near me does teeth whitening?", an answer engine writes a short reply and may name two to four businesses. AEO is the work that makes yours one of them.
Why business owners should care now
Search behaviour is moving toward full questions, and full questions are where AI answers appear most. Pew Research Center found that 60% of Google searches that began with a question word produced an AI summary, compared with 8% of one- or two-word searches. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a result link in 8% of visits instead of 15%.
Analysts expect more movement. Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would fall 25% by 2026 as people switch to AI chatbots and virtual agents. That is a forecast, not a measurement, so we do not build plans on it. We build on what is observable: your customers are asking these tools questions today.

What AEO work actually involves
- Answer-first content. A page for each real customer question, with a short direct answer at the top and detail below.
- Structured data. FAQ, Service, Organization and LocalBusiness schema so machines can read your pages without guessing.
- Crawler access. Making sure AI crawlers are allowed in, and publishing an llms.txt file that points them to your best pages.
- Entity consistency. The same business name, address, phone, hours and description on your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Authority signals. Reviews, citations and mentions on the sources the engines draw from. Semrush found that about half of the links in ChatGPT-4o responses pointed to business or service websites, so your own site and your profiles on other sites both matter.
- Measurement. A fixed set of prompts tested on each engine every month, repeated to account for variation.
What AEO cannot do
It cannot guarantee a result. AI engines do not return the same answer every time, and each platform has its own behaviour. Anyone who promises a guaranteed ChatGPT recommendation is guessing. What AEO can do is raise your chances, and measuring it makes the progress visible.
